Agenda:
  • It is time for the annual persuasive paper assignment. We will use the issue of climate change that is prevalent in First Light. Students will take a stand on this issue and write a persuasive paper in support of their position. Guidelines will be given, and time will be given in class to research and draft the paper.

  • Study for the Wordly Wise Lesson 13 test.  It is on Thursday.
  • First Light reading: chapters 24 - 30

  • Research/Work time for the persuasive paper. Students will have time to do some reading in order to choose a stance. Once they have made their choice, they may begin researching specifically for their paper.

We are going to plant trees at Mounds Park in the morning and to FMSC in the afternoon!

Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes with good traction and bring extra pants and shoes in case you get muddy. It would be best to avoid wearing your tree planting clothes to FMSC. We will have time when we come back to school for lunch for you to change

Welcome back from Spring Break! We are off on some wild adventures these last two months. We're starting a new novel, learning about the American Revolution, and going on a couple of cool field trips. We're off and running!

Monday - April 4

  • Welcome Back
  • Prelude to Revolutionary War - the events that lead up to and caused the war
Homework:
  • Be ready for First Light tomorrow. Bring your book and your spiral.

Tuesday - April 5

Agenda:
  • Intro First Light; we will read the Prologue together in class and have an introduction of foreshadowing,
  • Character list: you will keep a list of the many characters in this novel. They can be confusing and a list will be helpful to keep them straight.
  • Hand out lit. circle questions. A little bit differently this time, we will give you your study questions each week to go along with your reading. You will get together in lit. circles to go over your responses with the others in your group.

Homework:
  • Read chapters 1 through 4 (that means 4, too) and respond to the questions by next Monday. Lit circles next Monday, April 11.

Wednesday - April 6

Agenda:
  • More prelude to the Revolutionary War. Laws that angered the colonists. King George III needs to pay for the French and Indian War, so let's find out how he plans to do this.
  • We'll talk about some of the laws he instated and how the colonists responded to the laws.
  • Video: Liberty -- "The Reluctant Revolutionaries". Respond to the questions handed out to go with the video.

Homework:
  • Be reading First Light, Chapters 1-4 and respond to the questions.

Thursday - April 7

  • We will check in with our reading to see how everyone is doing with the lit. circle questions, character list and any questions you may have to this point.
