8th Graders - Welcome!

For the first time, Mounds Park Academy is allowing 8th graders to be a part of our Classic Debate team. As you know, we've scheduled a number of sessions to introduce you to debate. On Tuesday, October 2nd, we'll visit study halls and do a session there. Otherwise, we have times available after school as well. (We can do Thursday study halls as well if there is demand.)

The first tournament that we're opening up to 8th Grade registrations is on Saturday, October 13th. We'll travel by bus to Lakeville North HS. A large number of schools will be competing there, and you'd debate only against other first-year debaters. We can help you get ready...

Please see Ms. Murr or Mr. Vergin if you have any questions.

Practice opportunities - This week

We won't have evidence and sample cases ready until the weekend, but we'd be happy to meet with anyone who is free after school this Tuesday / Wednesday to introduce you to Classic Debate.

VETERANS: If you have done any research, please get it to me by the end of Thursday. Thanks.

Learning Classic Debate - A Guide

Learning Classic Debate is a very handy introduction to competitive debate.  (Click on the link to download your own copy.)  It is specifically written for the format you will be debating.  Keep it handy as a resource.  We'll expand on certain parts in later postings.  (The format itself is much easier to understand when you see it, rather than simply read about speaker order, etc.)

Hello.  If you are reading this, you've probably already decided to give competitive debate a try.  (If you are simply checking us out because you are curious, welcome as well. Please stop by or email me if you have any questions.)

We'll use this site for a lot of our communication, as well as a place to distribute and share research and other materials.  I'm still getting the hang of this new blogging program, so expect some improvements as we go...

Some of you will have already competed in your first debate tournament in a little less than two weeks.  That means that it is time to kick our preparations into gear...

OCTOBER TOURNAMENTS - The registration process will be explained.  (You do not need to register for all of the tournaments, but that certainly is an option.)

Saturday, October 6 - Eastview HS
Tuesday, October 9 - Minnehaha Academy
Saturday, October 13 - Lakeville North HS

The topic that will be debated at these tournaments:  Resolved:  States should ban the sale of violent video games to minors.
