Bienvenue! To French IV. This year we are going to be covering material in the textbook Sur le vif (an expression meaning "from real life" or "on the spot"). Rather than speaking and writing in French about grocery shopping and the weather, you will learn to describe relationships with family and friends and to express opinions about youth culture, immigration, travel, television, and film. You and your classmates will reflect on your attitudes toward ecology, discuss the role of education, and speculate about future social and political directions. You will learn about how these topics are seen in the French and Francophone world, and make comparisons with American perspectives. This course offers you a contextualized review of the basic structures of the French language that you have studied in your previous courses, adding enough new points to enable you to become a more sophisticated language user.
Materials you will need to bring to class:
• Sur le vif textbook and workbook
•A three-ring binder with loose paper (dividers are optional) or some sort of notebook with folders to hold papers.
• laptop
• Le Petit Prince will be used Quarter 3.
•English /French Dictionary at home
French Grades:
Test and Quiz grades are earned through an absolute percentage scale. 100= A+
93-99 = A 78-79 = C+ 60-62 = D-
90-92 = A- 73-77 = C 0-59= F/
88-89 = B+ 70-72 = C- no credit
83-87 = B 68-69 = D+
80-82 = B- 63-67 = D
Evaluation Breakdown:
Based on 100%:
Tests and quizzes= 30%
Homework= 15%
Participation= 15%
Speaking and Listening= 20%
Writing and Reading= 20%
Guidelines:
1. All MPA rules will be followed in class. For example: dress code, absences, tardies, plagiarism, gum chewing...)
2. Try to speak as much français possible!
3. You must come to class prepared with books, notebooks and completed homework assignments. A late assignment will receive a reduction of 10% for each day it is late.
4. Please check the French IV Blog weekly for assignments and activities for the week. I shall post a new blog entry on Sunday evening for the upcoming week.
5. Please speak with me if you need help or have any questions or concerns.
