cette semaine 26-30

This quarter we are concentrating on basic communication with learned phrases: simple questions and answers, simple descriptions of people and things, simple narration in the present and simple explanations as to why something is done. Themes and topics include: greeting and meeting people, time and weather, family and friends: family relationships, food and restaurants, money and shopping school and education and daily activities.

This week we are talking about time; asking for the time, indicating the time and saying when certain events are scheduled. Activities involve all four modalities of: speaking, reading, writing and listening.  We are also talking about dates: asking the day of the week, giving the date and talking about birthdays and holidays. We are wrapping up our lessons this week by talking about the weather. This lesson will include weather expressions and seasons.

Wednesday's homework will be: pages 53-54 in the workbook.

Next week: We will review for a quiz on food, time, days, months and weather on Monday for a small quiz on Wednesday.

 images.jpgLes crêpes

This is by far the best recipe for crêpes I have ever used.  My uncle Roger was a chef in France and desserts were his specialty.  I am proud to share this with you!

•    The crêpe batter should be made the day before and placed in the refrigerator.  It also tastes fine if you make it just before you cook up the crêpes.  I have done it both ways with great results.

Ingredients:
¾ cup of flour
a pinch of salt
1 tablespoon of powdered sugar
3 eggs
2 tablespoons of orange or lemon juice (from an orange or lemon)
1 cup of milk
• 4 tablespoons of melted butter * to be added to the batter just before cooking the crêpes.

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, and put in refrigerator for a day (or a few hours). Add the melted butter to the batter just before you cook the crêpes. Pour a little batter into a hot frying pan or crêpe pan (if you have one) and spread the batter so that a thin layer covers the entire pan. Crêpes are very thin pancakes, so do not use too much batter.  Flip the crêpe when the edges begin to brown.  Because you add the melted butter to the batter, there is no need to grease the pan. You should make about 10 crêpes.

Spread either sugar, lemon juice, any flavor of jam, or Nutella (contains nuts) on the crêpe. Roll the crêpe up and enjoy!

Vinaigrette Recipe

This is another family recipe and a prefect dressing for a green salad.

In a small bowl mix:
1 tsp honey mustard
salt and pepper
1 tbs Balsamic vinegar
2 tbs olive oil
fresh finely chopped chives
garlic powder (to taste)

I sometimes double the recipe if I am preparing a large salad. I also add parsley if I have it on hand. The honey mustard is key in this recipe. I suggest you add salt and pepper and garlic to taste. I usually just sprinkle enough of each of these ingredients to lightly cover the bottom of the bowl. Add a little at first and taste it. You can always add more.

This quarter we have been focusing on Unit 2 in the Discovering French Bleu series. We have been focusing on the themes of food, beverages, counting money, telling time, days of the week, months of the year. This week we'll be discussing weather ( how fitting with the potential snow!)  and seasons. We continue to work on writing skills, listening skills, reading authentic material and speaking. There will be a test on the Unit next Wednesday (12/16)

Finishing up Unit 1

We have been reviewing the basics this quarter, in particular numbers 0-1,000. Students have made flashcards and have been practicing not only recognizing numbers in French but writing them out as well. I encourage daily practice of numbers with the flashcards. The stack is thick. I reminded the kids that they won't be making quite as many flashcards in upcoming units. :-) In conjunction with number practice and vocabulary words pertaining to greetings, farewells, and simple questions, we have been writing dialogues and working on reading strategies. The class continues to do a great job on oral presentations.

Last week we watched a lovely film in French called Les Trois Brigands. This film was presented without subtitles. Quite pleased by how well the class understood the story. They completed a worksheet afterwards answering all sorts of questions related to the film.

There will be another quiz next week on Leçon 2. The Unit test will be October 29th. The test has also been posted on the test calendar.

À la prochaine!
