Spelling Letter
Dear Second Grade Families,
Today your child is bringing home this week's list of spelling words. At the second grade level, the weekly list will be comprised of the following:
* Words which follow a particular spelling pattern/phonetic rule
* Several challenge words derived from other subject areas
Every Friday, your child will bring home a teacher-prepared list of spelling words. Each Monday your child will be given a pre-test prior to any word study. The pre-test will be self-corrected with teacher guidance. This requires the student to focus on each letter of the word.
Throughout the course of the week, your child will perform various activities with the spelling list in the classroom. We may do a creative writing project using some of the list words. Your child may also use the list when learning new dictionary skills among other activities.
It is very important that your child study the spelling words at home as well as in school. It is a good idea to practice the words with your child both orally and in written form. Each Friday your child will be given the mastery test on his/her list of words. It is important that the needs of all students be met within the spelling program. Based on initial testing performed last week, your child will be responsible for the portion of the spelling list noted below.
It is very possible that I will change the portion of the list to which your child has been assigned once the spelling program is underway. If that is the case with your child, I will inform you of this. Although your child will be tested on the part of the list noted below, he or she may choose to accept the challenge of trying all of the words on the Friday mastery test. The challenge words are meant to be just that an extra-challenge not a requirement.
