No Classes due to 6th grade Field Trip

Expressions and equations worksheet due Thursday, June 2.
Scholastic Math -- Harry Potter due June 8.

Thursday - June 2

We will go over the homework from last Thursday, and we will do some more work with algebraic equations in preparation for your final test next Wednesday.

Test Prep/Review:

Textbook --  Link to online text
here
  • p. 625   1-17 all
  • p. 667   1-30 odds only
  • p. LA9   9-17
Complete these to the best of your ability. We will go over it in detail on Monday and shore up any areas in which you are having trouble. You will be allowed one note card with any notes/formulas you want to help you on the test. You can figure if it is on the review, it will be on the test.

Looking ahead:

Monday - Review
Wednesday - final test on select lessons from ch. 11-12. See the review for specifics.

Integers!!

Here is a website that has a LOT of Integer practice on it: Integer Links

Monday - May 16:

We start Integers today. 11-1/11-2 due Wednesday.

Wednesday - May 18:

  • Integers worksheet 11-1/11-2 due today.
  • Next comes subtracting: think of it like temperature dropping (not hard to do here in MN!).

  • Rules:
To subtract an integer, add its opposite
Example: -4 - (-3) = -4 + 3
                              = -1

Example: -3 - 1 = -3 + (-1)
                          = -4

Homework:
  • Worksheet 11-3/Number Line Jumps due Friday

Friday - May 20:

Multiplying and Dividing Integers:

For each, the product or quotient of two integers with the same sign is always positive.
For each, the product or quotient of two integers with different signs is always negative.

Examples:
2 x (-1) = -2  (different signs)
-2 x (-2) = 4  (same sign)

Homework:

Geometry Games Review & Formulas for Ch. 9-10 Test

Test on Chapters 9 & 10 Thursday, May 12.

You will be allowed to use ONE side of ONE index card for your formulas. No vocabulary definitions allowed.

Here are the formulas you need:

Angles of a triangle = 180 degrees
Angles of a quadrilateral = 360 degrees
Perimeter = add all sides
Area of a quadrilateral = b x h
Area of a triangle = b x h
                                  2

Volume = L x W x H
Surface Area = 2(L x W) + 2(L x H) + 2(W x H)

Circumference of a circle = 3.14 x diameter or 2(3.14 x radius)
Area of a circle =
πr2

Review the terms from Ch. 9 & 10, too. Use pp. 509-514 & 561-564 of the online text: Online Text Link

Peer Teaching Week

Kids are peer teaching this week! They've become masters of one lesson from the Geometry unit in chapter 9 of our textbook. Their objective is to not only teach the material, but to do so in an inventive way that keeps their classmates' attention (This is no easy task, as they are finding!)

As of today, we've had two lessons: angles and triangles.  John O., Teja, and Michael taught us about angles by demonstrating measuring and identifying the different types of angles. They had a game ready, and the kids enjoyed the friendly competition, and of course, the Starbursts!

Ellie, Brendan, and Susie produced an informative Powerpoint about triangle classification, then topped it off with a very hands-on lesson. Students were each given a Blondie brownie and were told to create three different types of triangles with a plastic knife. Below are my results: an isosceles, a scalene and an equilateral triangle! Deliciously fun and informative!

Can't wait to see what the other groups come up with! Stay tuned ...

Homework:
John O's angle worksheet is due Friday
Susie's triangle worksheet is due Monday

No homework due today. We will pick up the work from last Thursday. Be sure to bring the 7-1 worksheet with you.

In addition, we'll move forward with percents and fractions, and finding the percent of a number.

We'll check stocks, too.

Thursday - February 17

Update:  We didn't get as far as I had planned due to assembly schedule. We will pick up the 7-1/7-2 work on Wednesday. We will also check stocks.

Tuesday - February 15

Onward we go through ratios and proportions! We will continue this week with lessons 6-4 and 6-5.

Below are two links to some online math games for practicing proportions:

Homework:

  • pp. 31 and 36 worksheet due Thursday
  • Teach someone at home how to play Proportion Rummy - get a signature on your homework from that person.

Week of February 7 - 11

Monday - February 7

Today we venture into Ratios and Proportions. I love this unit and we will have lots of fun with it. Besides learning the concepts, we'll put them to use in real-life situations (as in, "When will I ever use this in life?" Well, I will show you!).

Chapter 6 is where we are headed if you are looking for a reference to the online text. We'll work in lessons 6-1 and 6-2 today and possibly play a game. We'll also check stocks if possible.

Homework:

Worksheet handed out with exercises from lessons 6-1/6-2 and some real-life ratios I've asked you to find at home.
Due Wed.

Today we reviewed for the Chapter 2 Test this coming Thursday.

You can continue to review for the test using the online text:
6th Grade Math Online Text Link

Refer to pages 126-129; lessons 2-1 through 2-7. You are not required to complete any of the exercises, but it would be in your best interest to try those that are giving you trouble (mean, median, mode an range, maybe?). Also, pay attention to the vocabulary section on page 126. There WILL be questions regarding vocab. from this chapter on the test (disregard #'s 3 and 5 in the vocab. regarding positive and negative integers; we will get into integers in the next chapter).

Test is on Thursday on sections 2-1 through 2-7. We will also check stocks that day.

Week of January 24-28

Monday - January 24

Today we will continue with our graphing chapter. Worksheet 2-4 is due today. In addition, we will move on to line plots which are very similar to bar graphs.

In the Stock Market Game, we will investigate Mutual Funds. Use the links below to help you research two different mutual funds. Complete the worksheet handed out in class (there is a document link below, too). Bring this to class on Wednesday to share with your group.
