Nansee Greeley, Lower School Director, led our discussion about Multiple Intelligences.
Who: Howard Gardner of Harvard University.
Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences
What: Seven distinct intelligences (one more recently added)
Intelligence is not fixed; intellectual ability can be developed
Intelligence is not unitary; many ways to be smart
Not how smart you are, but how you are smart
Why: To reach all students
To develop diverse intelligences
To give all students an equal opportunity to excel
To help students reach potential
To teach students about their uniqueness so they are validated
To teach students to respect the uniqueness of others
Each person completed a multiple intelligence assessment and shared their strengths with the group.
We discussed what different styles between parents, teachers, children mean when trying to help a child who has a different learning style.
We reviewed a chart about the Eight Ways of Learning, which included how one thinks, what one loves and what is needed based on the multiple intelligences approach.
We shared different experiences with how multiple intelligences are incorporated at MPA and at home.
A child friendly assessment of multiple intelligences was available to take home.
Two books were available to scan.
Differentiating Instruction in the Regular Classroom by Diane Heacox
You're Smarter Than You Think: A Kid's Guide to Multiple Intelligences by Thomas Armstrong.
Summer opportunities were discussed. Classes at MPA were mentioned as well as other options in the community. Connecting with nature seemed to be a popular option.
