2-Minute Review: Europe and Japan in Ruins
Dylan Saul
1. 60 million people died in WWII, Europe was in bad shape.
2. Famine and disease caused lots of deaths in bombed cities like London or Warsaw.
3. People blamed the government for the war and many supported the Communist Party that promised change, especially in France and Italy. However, the communists went on violent strikes that made them loose popularity.
4. Nazi leaders were accused of crimes against humanity and murdering 11 million people in the Nuremberg Trials. Most were given death sentences or life in prison.
5. While occupying Japan, General Douglas MacArthur began demilitarization so that Japan couldn’t declare war unless they had already been attacked.
6. Americans created a constitution that created the Diet, or a Parliament, created by the people. The Diet was lead by a Prime Minister that the Diet elected. The emperor became a figurehead.
7. The United States and the Soviet Union became the two most powerful countries after WWII.
