In 2008, a video was released of an interrogation of Omar Khadr, a youth being held in Guantanamo, in which he cries either saying help me, kill me or calling for his mother. Augusto Pinochet was the appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Army. with support from the (CIA), he put an end to the Democratically elected government in Chile before him. Another example of the united states leaning towards dictatorship. In 1974, the military appointed him as President of Chile. The government under his rule was strong against political opposition, and an estimated 3,200 people were killed who tried to oppose him. He was accused of “systematic and widespread human rights violations, including mass-murder, torture, kidnapping, illegal detention, and Censorship of the press”. People didn’t like that, so he was forced into house arrest in Britain, and was eventually allowed to return to Chile, but he was no longer a part of the government.

The Tlatelolco Massacre, also known as The Night of Tlateloloco, took place on October 2, 1968 , in the Plaza de las Tres Cultureas in Mexico City. There were an estimated 200 to 300 deaths, even though the government officially reported only 30 deaths during the massacre. The event began when a student movement consisting of 10,000 university and secondary school students gathered to demand more rights. The main student movement group, called the Consejo Nacional de Huelga, demanded the government to allow more freedom for political prisoners; the abolition of granaderos; the dismissal of the chief of police and the identification of officials who were responsible for the bloodshed caused in the previous repressions. Ironically, the CNH demanded the repeal of the law that imprisoned people who attended meetings, which were considered threatening to public order. The current president of the time, Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, greatly opposed the Consejo Nacional de Huelga and was determined to stop them.
Many years later, information revealed that the Presidential Guard, a branch of the military, had posted snipers in the buildings surrounding Tlatelolco Plaza on the day of the massacre. The sharpshooters were ordered to shoot at the military troops posted near Tlatelolco Plaza and the military troops would believe students were shooting at them. Then, the military troops would open fire.
The government was secretly plotting against protestors in order to control the civilians.
The NAFTA written in January 1994, was a treaty between the US, Canada and Mexico. I opened up almost unrestricted trade between these countries. The idea was to slowly every 5 to 10 years remove tariffs on types of trade. This agreement helped mexico expand its foreign trade. The agreement also hurt mexico because of the agreement caused agriculture trade within the country to drop. This caused many people financial trouble especially in the lower class. Today the US is still working upon the idea's in the NAFTA and are trying to build new agreements with Mexico.
The Dirty War, from 1976-1983, was a campaign by the Argentine government against suspected political opponents. This is where the phrase "The Disappeared" comes from, as dissidents would be kidnapped and never seen again. When President Juan Peron died the military took over and it became clear to Argentineans, and the world, that there was a great deal of corruption in the new government. To regain popularity, the government decided to try and take back the Falkland Islands from England. It was expected to be an easy victory, however, after 72 days of fighting the Argentina surrendered. The military regime then crumbled and a civilian government was set up on December 10, 1983, by Raul Alfonsin
