August 2008 Archives
Here is the assignment for the long weekend. We will not have class on Friday (9th Grade Retreat) or Monday (Labor Day). We are back together on Tuesday morning 9/2.
Assignment: Read pp. 26-34 and complete the handout that I will give you in class today (8/28).
Reminder: Greata and Audrey are doing their current events presentation first thing on Tuesday...
I forgot to say that the first two current events people will be Greta and Audrey
Well, I am up and running thanks to great training from Ms. Reardon-Offerman, so here goes.
Current Events Assignment
Two students each week will give a Current Events presentation each Friday. This presentation will be based on a story from within the past 48-72 hours. It must be based on a newspaper article (either print or online). Obviously, the 2008 election may be in the forefront of the news this fall, but other stories/issues are also relevant. The presentation will be done in tandem (as in pairs) and will be from 5-7 minutes, usually at the beginning of class. In addition, each student will turn in a one page analysis of the story.
Presentations Should Cover/Answer the Following:
Overview of the story
Why is the issue/event important? What is the larger significance?
Do you see evidence of bias in the story? If so, where/ what is it?
What other additional information would you like to know about the event/issue?
What are your personal opinions? Why?
Analysis:
The written component should cover the above questions and be presented in a 1-2 page essay. It should be carefully written and edited in essay form.
Points:
Presentation 25 Points
Analysis 40 points
65 Points Total
Assignment for Thursday:
Read Chapter 1, Section 3 ...Read it carefully as we will be writing a short, in-class essay on Thursday.
